Of all the file transfer services out there, WeTransfer is the most well-known, with around 80 million claimed monthly active users and over 2 billion files transferred. For all that scale, the actual product has stayed surprisingly restrictive, especially on the free and entry paid tiers, which is why so many users start looking elsewhere.

The free tier caps individual transfers at 3 GB, limits your total monthly transfers to 3 GB across the whole month, and on top of that allows only 10 transfers per month regardless of size. Files stay available for just 3 days. So if you send a single 3 GB transfer, your monthly quota is gone. If you send ten 1 MB attachments, your transfer count is exhausted. WeTransfer's free tier is among the least generous in the industry, designed to push users into the Starter plan rather than serve them.

The Starter plan costs 8 € per month (or 7 € on annual billing) and lifts the per-transfer limit to 300 GB, but keeps the 10-transfer-per-month cap and the 300 GB monthly aggregate. That means if you send a single 300 GB transfer, you've used your full month. If you send 11 smaller transfers, you hit the count limit. The Ultimate plan removes both caps but jumps to 23 € per month, a significant step up for users who simply need flexibility rather than enterprise volume.

On top of the pricing structure, WeTransfer's interface has barely evolved over the years. The free download page is ad-supported, password protection is locked behind paid tiers, and there's no option to choose where files are stored, which is increasingly relevant for European users with GDPR data residency obligations.

TransferRocket takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of charging a flat monthly subscription, you pay per transfer, calculated transparently from file size and storage duration.
